Walking track a treasure for town

Sir,

Congratulations to Waihi Walkways. We first discovered the walkway on your website www.waihiwalkways.org.nz and now enjoy the fruits of your 10 years of devotion and labour, walking the track regularly.

This walkway combines beautifully with the pit-rim walkway, taking in scenic views of the Ohinemuri River.

What we especially appreciate, with both these walks, is the balance achieved between plantings and vistas and it is wonderful to be able to enjoy extended views down the waterways, across farmland and out to the surrounding hills.

The autumn colours this year have made the walk pleasant and cheery even on the coldest of days. Many tracks in New Zealand seem to suffer from over-planting with ever-increasing loss of views and outlooks, which are two things we value, along with plant and bird life, when out walking. Your partnership with Hauraki District Council and other groups has now created an asset that families and visitors will all enjoy for years to come.

Once again, congratulations.

Liz Hawker and family, Waihi.
