Cycleway Proposal

While work proceeds with the feasibility study regarding the National Cycleway Hauraki section, further proposals are afoot regarding a section of the old railway line from Paeroa to Te Aroha. This section was not in the Quick-start programme announced by the Prime Minister in July but Hauraki has had an approach from the Matamata-Piako District Council to cooperate in getting an application together to the Ministry of Tourism for funding for this branch of the cycleway. It is suggested that this branch of the route will add substance to the cycleway from Thames to Waihi, being an interesting side branch where travelers can go to have a relaxing night at a spa.

Our Council has supported the project in principle and has allocated $1,000 towards the market assessment and business case analysis for the project. This money will come from the $15,000 already allocated for cycleway development.
