Mill Stream Cascades Welcome to Waihi WalkwaysThe vision:To promote rewarding walking opportunities in and around WaihiWaihi Walkways' vision is to create a series of linked walkways around the Waihi District, for good health and for appreciation and enjoyment of our wonderful natural environment. These will take the walking public along the Ohinemuri River and tributaries, and link with existing bush tracks and Department of Conservation walkways. As the walkways are developed, a systematic and deliberate programme of environmental restoration and enhancement is established. Added to this is the opportunity to view our unique heritage features, which are currently being researched and interpreted throughout the district. We believe this is a significant long term contribution to our community and a part of the upsurge of interest in walkways, ecology and history throughout New Zealand. The Waihi Walkways group was originally established in November 1998, developing to Waihi District Walkways Incorporated in July 2000. From the outset Waihi Walkways have worked towards establishing good consultation practice with Hauraki District Council, Environment Waikato, Department of Conservation, local Iwi, private landowners, neighbours and interested community organisations. Waihi District Walkways Inc. currently comprises some 60+ members with representation from a wide variety of community organisations as well as local and regional authorities. Mill Stream Walkway was the first walkway to be constructed, and staged development of further walkways down the banks of the Ohinemuri River is proceeding.
We update our website regularly, so please re-visit us to view the progress. Feedback is most welcome. :-)
